History[]

Pre-production[]

The first known attempt to make a television adaptation of the Railway Series books was by the BBC in 1953. It was decided that Hornby Dublo models would be used and everything went ahead but the project did not succeed. During the live airing of the first episode, Henry derailed and a hand was seen coming down to put him back on the tracks. Nothing else is known to remain of this project.

There have been several other attempts, however. The first somewhat successful run was on the children's show "Jackanory" in 1970. The Railway Series books were read out loud by host Ted Ray. Five books were read in all until 2nd October 1970.

The current television series got its start in 1979 when the Reverend Awdry was interviewed on the Bluebell Railway for a feature on steam engines. The producer, Britt Allcroft, had read some of the books before the interview. She had become fascinated with the characters and after getting funding from her local bank, acquired the series so she could adapt it for television.

The Britt Allcroft Company Era (1984-2000)[]

Allcroft rounded up a production crew, which included model director David Mitton, narrator Ringo Starr and composers Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell. The first series premiered in October 1984 and with its success, came a second series in 1986.

After the huge successes of the first and second series, Britt Allcroft set another goal: bringing Thomas into the United States. Due to stricter broadcasting schedules, Britt had to create a half hour programme to go with the five and a half minute episodes. The result was Shining Time Station, starring Ringo Starr as Mr. Conductor, which began airing in 1989. This was another hit for Allcroft and was the beginning of the "Thomas craze" in America.

When the television series returned in 1991 with the third series, there were some big changes. Instead of following closely to the Railway Series, Allcroft and Mitton loosely adapted many of the Reverend's stories as well as loosely adapted magazine stories written by the current head writer Andrew Brenner (who unfortunately did not get credited for these adaptations), they even wrote their own episodes, much to the Reverend's disdain. The fourth series, airing in 1995, only had one original episode however and featured many new characters such as the Skarloey Railway engines.

By now, the series was doing incredibly well and a full-length theatrical film soon loomed ahead. Britt Allcroft decided to drift completely away from Railway Series stories and in 1998, the fifth series, contained all original storylines, allowing Britt to showcase the series as her own before the upcoming film.

The full-length theatrical film gained the title, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, and after many changes from the original script, it premiered in July 2000. The film recieved mixed to negative reviews from critics, and becoming a huge box-office failure - forcing Allcroft to step down from her position as a Deputy Chairperson. Her company was sold to Gullane Entertainment and they, in turn, were later sold.

The Gullane Entertainment Era (2001-2003)[]

In 2001, the idea for a spin-off focusing on the non-rail vehicles was being tossed around at Gullane. It is possible that this idea later became Jack and the Sodor Construction Company. During the process, the sixth series was produced and aired in 2002, as was the seventh in 2003.

  2. Sleeping Beauty - After many years had passed, some rescuers began a journey to find Duke and reunite him with his old friends.
  3. Bulldog - Falcon was sent to take the Mountain Road with Duke. However, he was impatient and did not pay attention to Duke's advice. He eventually winded up dangling from a cliff.
  4. You Can't Win - One evening, Duke is too ill to manage by himself. Stuart teases him about this, but Duke gets his own back and he proves that he still has a lot of life left in him.
  5. Four Little Engines - Sir Handel is pushed off the rails by some angry coaches. A red narrow gauge engine named Skarloey is the only engine available and is determined to get his passengers home, even when one of his front springs breaks.
  6. A Bad Day for Sir Handel - Sir Handel and Peter Sam are brought in to help Skarloey and his best friend, Rheneas. Sir Handel is in a bad mood and deliberately derails himself on purpose to get out of work.
  7. Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady - One day, Henry threatens to leave without Peter Sam's passengers. In a haste to meet his connection, Peter Sam accidentally leaves the Refreshment Lady behind.
  8. Rusty Helps Peter Sam - Gordon advises Sir Handel to get out of work by pretending to be ill, leaving Peter Sam and a little narrow gauge diesel named Rusty to take over. However, some cars mistake Peter Sam for Sir Handel and crash into him at the incline.
  9. Home at Last - Peter Sam informs Skarloey of the newest arrival, a careless and bad-tempered engine named Duncan. Soon, Skarloey is sent to Duncan's aid when he is stuck under a decrepit tunnel.
  10. Rock 'n' Roll - Rusty is concerned about Duncan, who ignores his warning about a broken section of track. After Duncan derails, Rusty grudgingly comes to the rescue.

  12. Steam Roller - Skarloey tells Sir Handel of an anti-railroad steamroller named George, who Sir Handel vows to pay out, only to find that both he and George are too evenly hot-headed.
  13. Passengers and Polish - Duncan complains about not getting polished. His rudeness reaches its peak when he stops on the viaduct and refuses to move.
  14. Gallant Old Engine - Duncan hears the story of how Rheneas saved the railway from closure, even after suffering a serious breakdown, and Rheneas returns to the railway.

  19. Henry and the Elephant - A circus comes to Sodor, but Henry and some workmen are called to investigate a blockage in his tunnel, where he unhappily comes across an elephant.

  21. Bulls Eyes - Daisy claims to Toby that she would simply have to "toot" to scare animals off. However, when she comes across a bull, she realizes that it will need more than a command to move it away.
  22. Thomas and the Special Letter - After Sir Topham Hatt reads a letter inviting the engines to visit the Mainland, Thomas becomes very conceited and puts his big trip in jeopardy after crashing through a set of buffers and into a brick wall.
  23. Thomas Meets the Queen - After the accidents about ditches and mines, the Queen comes to Sodor, giving Gordon and Thomas a special opportunity.
  24. Fish - Extra vans are added to the Flying Kipper and as a result, Henry needs a back engine to help him up Gordon's Hill. Duck offers to help but a badly attached tail lamp causes a problem.
  25. Special Attraction - After Toby's missed opportunity to join a parade, Percy is called into the harbor to deal with Bulstrode, a highly disagreeable barge. Bulstrode makes the freight cars more troublesome than usual, though he pays dearly for it.
